Impaction

An impacted toothe is a common condition occuring when a toothe fails to fully emerge from the gums. If these teeth partially emerge they may trap food in the soft tissue around them which causes the gums and surrounding tissue to root, giving rise to a foul odur and pain called pericoronitis. The most common teeth to become impacted are the wisdom teeth. A surgical extraction of these impacted teeth is always advisable.

Wisdom teeth, otherwise known as third molars, are the last set of teeth to develop. Sometimes these teeth emerge from the gum line and the jaw is large enough to allow room for them, but most of the time, this is not the case. More often, one or more of these third molars fails to emerge in proper alignment or fails to fully emerge through the gum line and becomes entrapped or "impacted" between the jawbone and the gum tissue. Impacted wisdom teeth can result in swelling, pain, and infection of the gum tissue surrounding the wisdom teeth. In addition, impacted wisdom teeth can cause permanent damage to nearby teeth, gums, and bone and can sometimes lead to the formation of cysts or tumors that can destroy sections of the jaw. Therefore, dentists recommend people with impacted wisdom teeth have them surgically removed.

It is the removal fo the frenum. Frenum is a muscular attachment before two tissues. There are two frena in the mouth, one is lingual frenum which connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth and maxillary labial frenum which connects inside of your upper lip to the gums just above the upper two front teeth. This high frenal attachment can some times obstruct normal function and also increase the gap between two front teetch.

A frenectomy (also known as a frenulectomy, frenulotomy or frenotomy) is the removal of a frenulum, a small fold of tissue that prevents an organ in the body from moving too far. It can refer to frenula in several places on the human body. It is related to frenuloplasty, a surgical alteration in a frenulum. Done mostly for orthodontic purposes, a frenectomy is either performed inside the middle of upper lip, which is called labial frenectomy, or under the tongue, called lingual frenectomy. Frenectomy is a very common dental procedure in the dental world and is performed both on children and adults.

There are several frenula that are associated with types of frenectomy

Lingual frenectomy (of the tongue) as treatment for ankyloglossia

Labial frenectomy (of the lip) is very common with patients undergoing denture treatment in order to get the proper fit of dentures or patients who have tissues attached to centre of upper lip and causing recession of gums or gap between the upper front teeth called central incisors.

A frenectomy can also be performed to remove a section of tissue (the frenulum) that attached to the gingival tissue between two teeth.

Orthognathic surgery (Greek “orthos” means straight and “gnathos” means jaw) is a single or double jaw surgery which is performed to reposition the jaws. During orthognathic surgery a correct jaw alignment and occlusion, as well as, facial harmony is achieved. When the jaws are moved forwards or backwards, up or down, or rotated, the facial soft tissue in the chin, cheeks, lips and tip of the nose move accordingly. Therefore, once the jaws are correctly positioned a harmony between the facial features is acquired which results in a beautiful profile.
